NexLoop designs biomimetic products and systems to collect and integrate in situ* atmospheric water sources into sustainable and affordable urban food production.

*In situ is defined as: in the natural or original place. For NexLoop, this means water collected in place or on site where food is being produced.

Biomimicry Design Process

Our vision of an integrated, nature-inspired food- water-energy nexus relies heavily on our ability to design a locally attuned and responsive food system. In order to do this, we must address some of the underlying resource inputs and flows that underpin food production efforts. We believe this starts with water. So, we framed our challenge question in these terms:

How might we rethink urban food systems to be more locally attuned, self-sustaining, and symbiotic by harnessing in situ water sources?

The shift toward more decentralized, local food systems is changing how cities deal with food production. We are specifically interested in how urban food systems can develop more resilient water management strategies. We translated our challenge question from the functions our design needed to accomplish, and the context in which those functions would occur, into ecologically and biologically- relevant terms:

How do ecosystems, habitats, and organisms manage local water resources to be self-sufficient and resilient?

Our solution is an integrative, biomimetic strategy for local food-water-energy systems. The design is called AquaWeb: a modular, scalable building envelope system for urban food production applications, such as greenhouses, indoor ver cal farms, and container farms. The system combines multiple functions from our champion species to capture, filter, store, and distribution water for food growing.
